ಠ_ಠ Made this painting of a bunny sleeping on a vinyl and people got mad bc it can look like a bunny being cooked on a pan

That's what I saw at first at glance too, but it's clearly a record player if you look at it.
Sorry people won't think for 1 second before replying.
Edit: thank you for the awards and up votes.

First glance also looks a bunny in a pot. But honestly, bunny in a pot makes more sense than bunny on a vinyl player.

I don’t want to skin this rabbit I caught.
Why shouldn’t I just cook it with the fur on?
No one will know.
Why do they cut off the fur anyways? Chicken is cooked with the skin on and it is delicious.
Who is going to stop me?
No one! I will cook my rabbit with fur and eat it too!
Edit: removed two sentences.

I feel like this comment would be better without the last 2 sentences. Like you are just some unhinged guy who eats rabbit with the fur on.

Deleted sentences for anyone curious:
One poorly cooked rabbit later….

Also you have to skin that sucker before cooking it. I prefer to do a nice slow cook in the crock pot. Shredded rabbit and linguine with white wine sause. Delicious.

The best art gives you a gut reaction. It's arguably a strength that the first glance is one that garnishes offense..
That said.. even knowing its a record player, that bunny is still dead AF.
6
u/KTMman200 1h ago
Nah, the bunny looks alive to me, just super passed out. It's chin is down towards its chest. Usually if they die in that position their head tilts back. So it looks like a safe conked out bunny.
But it definitely "garnishes" offence if "served" without context.
21
u/Parzival2436 1h ago
Yeah it's not great if it gives you the wrong reaction though. If it was intended to be cozy and people get upset, that's not "a strength". The only strength I can see there is that it's at least realistic looking.

u/TirbFurgusen 59m ago
I think it's great. It's art, it's subjective and gives emotion either way. I want to know what record it is. What's the story behind this? Is the rabbit dead? I didn't think it was at first and certainly didn't think it was being cooked fur and all but what if it was a frying pan? What's the story behind that? Some inexperienced starving socialite in war time? It could be so many things and nothing but I'm thinking about it. It's excellent art imo.

You could even have a rabbit on a record who's holding a frying pan cooking another rabbit.

u/TulpaPal 1h ago edited 1h ago
That is the first thing I saw, mainly because of how it's laying. I know some rabbits sleep like that but if it wasnt laying like that it would be more clear that it's resting and not dead. Maybe even if it was less curled up. It is a very sweet painting though.
Edit: yes, most rabbits don't sleep like that. Some do so I'm giving op leniency there because it's the pose they wanted it to be in and it's cute when they do.
225
u/Gazelizz 1h ago
Yeah I see that! But also I thought that if it was posing in a more straight way it would look more dead like it’s solid not soft?

u/PhantomOyster 1h ago
Make the label on the record more visible. Give it legible text. That will make it unmistakable.
38
u/Practical-Train-9595 1h ago
That’s what I was thinking too. Maybe something like White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane.

I like the concept, but def thought ded at first. Long time many bunny owner here. Maybe a loaf pose would've worked better? The side lay def is how they go 🙁
Either way, i wouldn't worry about it. If someone bothers to look at it more than a few seconds, it does look like a turn table, not a pan. I like the style, btw 😊 and the bunny is cute fr

I think the difference is probably that many people don't immediately recognize record players anymore haha
People are going to default to their more frequently seen schema, which is probably the frying pan if you're younger than 30ish.
17
u/Fickle_Watercress719 1h ago
This is a great point, actually. My first thought is that there are so many defining features of a record player that it’s impossible to mistake it for a pan… but I also own a record player.

I don’t disagree at all. It’s art! it’s subjective even if the painter painted objectively.
Perhaps i just noticed the record arm and pin first which keyed me into.
it can totally be based on where you start absorbing the piece.
if you start left side i can see you may process differently than right side starting perception6

I honestly saw a rabbit on a pan at first glance, and with how amazing it looked, I thought it was a artistic stand on the meat industry.
When I looked at it longer than a second, I could tell it was a record player. Still looks amazing but kinda loses the whole “artists tells a story” thing and would only make up for it if the inspiration was from an irl moment.
10
u/westcoastweedreviews 1h ago
Do people typically pan fry rabbits with the fur on?
Clearly a record player

u/ParksAndWreckYoSelf 1h ago
Personally, my version of mildly infuriating is when people say “a vinyl” instead of “a record” or “vinyl record”.
Vinyl is the type of plastic used. Vinyl record works, and it is correct to say “I have that album on vinyl,” but just saying “a vinyl” as a noun is grammatically incorrect
(Emphasis on mild, I’m not coming after OP like people came for them for the rabbit looking like dinner to some)
→ More replies (1)•
u/Excellent_Condition 24m ago
If we are being pedantic (and I do enjoy a good pedantic argument), there are lots of types of records as well. Birth records, marriage records, etc.
I think the argument could be made that vinyl record" is the most correct, but "record" is as ambiguous and non-specific as "vinyl."
Alternatively, it could be argued that any of them is fine because it's clear from context that OP means a vinyl record, not a piece of plastic or a birth certificate.

Looked like a pan to me too as I was scrolling by. The thick white lines on the record gives the illusion of depth. Also the white record center combined with the rabbit’s feet look like stew/vegetables.
I can clearly tell what it is looking at it longer than a second though.
3
u/Alcas239 1h ago
So let's operate under the assumption it IS a bunny being cooked in a pan......it's still art and very well done *shrug* there's dicks drawn in public and people get less worked up. If it's a well drawn dick with detail, I'm gonna compliment it
4
u/Le_inky_creator_20 1h ago
To be fair, its posed in a very dead-like way, and most people could imagine a rabbit on a pan before a record player; just not something you see often
4
u/OG_Sequia 1h ago
I'm sorry I saw that at first too! Not the pan, but a cooked bunny on a black plate

•

NGL my first glance made me think of that too but really looking at it makes it obvious what it is. Also I don't know what kind of psychopath would cook an uncleaned rabbit with the fur still attached in a pan on the stove lol.

u/OJStrings 1h ago
I saw it as a hare sleeping on a vinyl record. Their interpretation is valid too I suppose but the painting is great on its own merit. It looks more like a record player than a frying pan and if they see it differently then that's probably a reflection on how they view rabbits more than anything else.

I mean some people eat rabbit and some people don't. Just like fish or red meat. I'll always be an advocate for animal rights, but this is an amazing painting that is a conversation piece. I think it's interesting how other people's interpretations can make us feel differently about our art, But interpretation is half of the reason that art is made! I think you should always take things people have to say with a grain of salt And if they don't like your explanation, they don't have to like your art. What matters is that YOU like your art 😉
