Honestly, I find it hard to wrap my head around voting a certain way JUST to save myself money, unless I was dead broke. I am not trying to brag or "virtue signal." I just can't look at things in a vacuum like that. There are so many other things to consider and weigh.

Yeah. The unfortunate truth is that Republicans either lack the capacity or the willingness to put themselves in the shoes of the victims. Thus, it is the unfortunate, yet emphatic duty of the next Democratic administration to victimize the Republicans. It is the only way for them to ever demand legislation that will limit the unjust victimization of the weak.
The only way to prevent history from repeating itself is to prosecute any and all individuals from this administration who are complicit in breaking the law, up to and especially including the president.
That's necessary but not sufficient. The MAGAt populace will just vote in more of the like. They'll vote in people that promise to pardon the wicked and exact vengeance on the just. Systemic change is required to prevent that. We need legislation. We need Constitutional Amendments. And we can't get that in place when the Republicans know that only Republicans will behave in such an evil way. Dems must use that power as well. That is how you get them to support change.
EDIT: Just to expand on this since some people seem to appreciate what I'm saying here.
The issue is that, as Francis Wilhoit put it, "conservatism consists of two propositions to wit: there are those who the law binds but does not protect and those who the law protects but does not bind." And I think that expands beyond the law to norms and mores as well.
The current Democratic approach of going low when they go high simply feeds into this. We are allowing them to enact a system where the law always protects them and never fully binds them while the law never fully protects us yet always binds us.
As it stands, Republicans would never support something like pardon reform because they know theyre the only ones who lose out from it. They get to raid the capitol as long as theyre on Trump's side. If we wanted an amendment to change that, a Democratic president would need to start pardoning Dems that commit crimes against Republicans. Then Republicans will realize that the law treats them equally and that both they and the Democrats are both bound and protected by it. Then they will have to choose between being bound or being protected. But the result will affect us all.
I read a study way back about universal health care. Democrats were generally in favor and republicans weren’t. No real surprise there. However when they asked it again but at a community level republicans were overwhelmingly for it. They wanted it if they could see who was getting it. If it was outside their community they assumed it was getting abused. Essentially people who vote Republican could only feel empathy for people they can see. If they couldn’t see them they assumed they were bad or something. I can’t remember the exact wording of the conclusion.

Some are just sadistic or malicious. They like the suffering of the weak. It is the suffering itself that gives them pleasure.
Others support it because they feel that keeping others down is a great way to keep themselves up. This used to euphemistically be called "economic anxiety," but it's really more like societal anxiety. If there's no inherent value to being a white American citizen, then these people are likely to fall down the social ladder because they don't really have other great qualities that keep them above others.
Either way, there's no reasoning with them. We can't just say, "Being a bully is bad!" It's not a lack of understanding or anything that makes them act the way they do. It's a lack of consequences. This individual in this post is learning his lesson. We need the rest to learn the lesson as well.

Not trying to defend the MAGA asshole, but this is also sometimes how growth happens with people. It has to happen to them for the empathy or understanding to become clear. Again, not saying it’s right but it is pretty common on a human level, regardless of political background. It’s very common with how children grow as well.
